The role

The Investment Associate will support transaction sourcing, due diligence, portfolio management, and investment reporting and offers a unique opportunity to join one of the few multi-manager roles in the timberland industry.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support transaction sourcing, with a focus on secondary transactions through maintaining databases, building and maintaining broker and manager relationships, and monitoring trends in the timberland space.

  • Lead key elements of the transaction due diligence process by conducting financial analysis, investment modeling, and preparing materials for Stafford Timberland’s Investment Committee.

  • Assist in mobilizing third-party advisors in legal and tax diligence and develop sufficient knowledge and expertise on these matters to interpret and condense commercially relevant findings into due diligence documents.

  • Independently support senior staff on transaction execution, including NDA review, data room access, valuation analysis, and market commentary.

  • Support Portfolio Management through reviewing periodic investment results and commentary, and producing internal and external reports.

Other Responsibilities

  • Engage in sector research, analysis, and due diligence.

  • Participate in manager meetings and coverage processes, including monitoring investment activity, trends, and performance.

Our Requirements

Our ideal candidate would have the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Economics, or other related discipline (advanced degree or professional certification viewed as a strong positive).

  • Relevant work experience in investment banking, corporate finance, asset management, Big 4 accounting, or consulting setting (familiarity with secondary market transactions and timberland investments viewed as a strong positive but not compulsory).

  • Strong oral and written skills and business acumen.

  • Highly organized, exceptional attention to detail, and solutions oriented.

  • Ability to execute with a moderate-to-high level of autonomy.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Strong understanding of accounting concepts and financial analysis.

  • Strong financial modelling capabilities with limited need for oversight.

  • Strong knowledge of ESG principles and an interest in impact investing.
